The Honorable member of Parliament for Nsawam Addoagyiri and the current Chief Whip for the Parliament of Ghana has as part of his foremost vision to eradicate illiteracy from his constituency. He therefore launched the ” Literacy Project of Hon. Annoh-Dompreh,MP Nsawam-Addoagyiri, Majority Chief Whip of the Parliament of Ghana”. This project involve construction of library units in the community and also stocking the libraries of all the schools in the constituency with Library books. We therefore did our searches for partners in this regard and found Books2Africa who supported us with the first delivery of 1000 nursery and primary books.
The students in the municipality previously were not doing well in the BECE examinations. But in 2020 through a similar gesture the municipality emerged as the best in the Eastern region for the BECE examinations that was held. To keep this pace and get the students improving at this level, the donated books were distributed to 10 basic schools in the constituency. The schools had about 5000 students in total and 120 teachers. This is a rigorous literacy advocacy project in the constituency and so the books were distributed to the schools so the students can have access to these materials and read at their leisure to help improve academic performance in the basic schools.
The teachers have used these materials as subject references and also have penciled times in the class timetable where they asks students to go to the library and pick some reading books to read as part of their teaching curriculum. Again they asked them to summarize the contents as a way off assessment.
The literacy rate in the municipality has improved. The performance of the students even in the deprived schools have been improved as well. A lot of the student have access to these reading materials to read at their leisure which has helped improve learning and education in the municipality.
