Impact Report
We wanted to help raise and establish the culture of reading in the pupils in our community. Also we have embarked on a Literacy project which is aimed at eliminating illiteracy in our community. We set up community libraries and libraries in the schools in this regard and decided to stock these facilities with the books we received from Books2Africa.
Through the books we received and used to stock the libraries in the schools and the community, we have increased the engagement time with the students in terms of real reading time. For example, in the past, whenever it was library time on the timetable of these schools, there were no reading materials or story books at these libraries for the students to read. When we received the books and stocked these libraries with them, now the students have got books to read during these times and at their leisure times during and after school hours. Through this initiative and books received we have seen a great improvement of about 20% in the reading skills of the students in the schools in the community.
Teachers no longer have to read only one story books to the students. The books were of good number and the teachers could use them as reference materials. Also when its library time, the teachers direct the students to pick books to read and then afterwards ask them to make notes and summaries which was difficult to do earlier when there were no library books.
The students and schools that were beneficiaries of these books live in this community. In the end the illiteracy levels in the community is reduced by some significant margin as these youngsters can now read and write very well with the help of these books. They have become more interested in pursuing reading and learning which will enable them access greater opportunities in academia and industry in the future. They will in turn become educationally equipped and economically equipped force for the community and the country as a whole.
