Our school needed books to begin building op our library. The books that are here have been here for almost 50 years, ever since the school was built by the Germans. The books they left here are the only ones this school has ever had. The learners at our school do not have books that are at their level. The books here are either for college level or they are badly worn and destroyed. Having these books has provided our students with the opportunity to continue to excel in their English proficiency and develop a love of reading.
Our school is located on a farm in the middle of nowhere. There isn’t much for the children to do except play soccer or misbehave. Because the library now contains books at their reading level, the learners want to hang out in the library and read. They are no longer bored and misbehaving.
The books that have been the most useful are the short children’s books. The reason for this is because all grades can use these for English proficiency. Before school got out, we had the grade 1 and 2 children reading to the older children, and we had the older children practice their inflection and creative reading skills by reading to the younger children.
The books have improved the teachers planning and delivery because we were given many books on subject content, such as learners’ workbooks. The Math teacher began holding evening sessions for struggling learners using those books. She hopes to continue this practice next year. We also received many English learners’ workbooks, and we hope to do an English club with those next year. This has greatly improved the staff’s attitudes because it has given us the materials to be able to do the things we have longed to do with our learners. Ultimately, these books have given us hope.
